Lose Fat, Keep Muscle: What a Six-Month Exercise Study Found
ScienceDaily, October 9 ยท 20/10/2026 ยท added by men35 desk

Losing weight is not always the same as getting healthier. For older adults, the bigger challenge may be reducing body fat without losing valuable lean tissue. A six-month study of 123 adults, averaging 72 years old, found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) achieved that combination, while moderate training produced a small decline in lean mass.

You can weigh less and still lose something important: lean tissue.
That matters as we age. Muscle supports movement, everyday independence and physical function. So when trying to reduce body fat, the goal should be to improve body compositionโnot simply chase a lower number on the scale.
A six-month study published in Maturitas compared high-intensity interval training, moderate-intensity training and a low-intensity control programme in 123 healthy older adults, with an average age of 72.
The standout result? Both HIIT and moderate training reduced body fat, but only the HIIT group maintained lean mass. <Cite refs={["turn574001search1","turn574001search2"]}/>

Participants completed three supervised 45-minute gym sessions each week for six months.
Here is what researchers found:
HIIT: Reduced fat mass while maintaining lean mass.
Moderate training: Also reduced fat mass, but was associated with a small decline in fat-free mass.
Both approaches: Improved visceral fat measurementsโthe fat stored deep inside the abdomen. <Cite refs={["turn574001search1","turn574001search2"]}/>
These findings suggest that exercise intensity may influence how the body changes during a fat-loss programme.
But there is an important qualification: the differences were small and were not considered clearly clinically meaningful compared with lower-intensity exercise, particularly when measurement uncertainty was taken into account. <Cite refs={["turn574001search1"]}/>
In other words, HIIT showed a potentially useful advantage, not a guaranteed transformation.

Lean mass includes muscle, but it also includes other non-fat tissues and body water. A change in lean mass therefore does not automatically mean an equivalent change in muscle strength.
Still, preserving muscle becomes increasingly important with age. Losing too much muscle can make it harder to climb stairs, rise from a chair, carry shopping or maintain balance.
HIIT alternates short periods of demanding exercise with easier recovery periods. One possible explanation for the study's findings is that the greater muscular challenge provided a stronger signal to maintain lean tissue.
That is a plausible explanation, not proof that HIIT is always better than moderate exercise.

The study involved adults in their seventies. Its results should not be assumed to apply equally to younger men, every fitness level or every health condition.
The practical lesson is to think beyond weight loss.
Include resistance training to help maintain strength and muscle.
Choose aerobic exercise that matches your current fitness and health.
Increase intensity gradually rather than jumping straight into demanding intervals.
Support training with adequate nutrition, recovery and sleep.
If you have cardiovascular disease, joint problems or other medical concerns, seek professional advice before starting vigorous exercise.
HIIT is one optionโnot a requirement. A sustainable programme you can follow consistently is more useful than an intense routine you cannot maintain.

The most useful result was not simply that older adults lost fat. It was that the HIIT group reduced fat while maintaining lean mass.
For men over 35, the broader lesson is clear: measure progress by more than body weight. Strength, fitness, waist size and body composition can all help tell a more complete story.

HIIT showed a promising advantage for body composition in healthy older adults, but it was not proven universally superior. The goal is to lose excess fat while protecting the physical capacity you need for a strong, active life.
