A new 2026 meta-analysis has examined creatine plus resistance training in older adults. The researchers identified 11 RCTs and compared creatine plus resistance training with resistance training alone or placebo plus resistance training. πͺπππ§ π§ππ π₯ππ¦πππ₯ππππ₯π¦ ππ’π¨π‘π The combined creatine-and-training group showed a statistically significant improvement in muscle strength. The effect was small. The review reported a standardized effect size of 0.31, with moderate certainty for the strength outcome. But two other outcomes were less convincing. The pooled result for muscle mass was not statistically significant. Physical-function results were also not statistically significant, with very low certainty of evidence. πͺππ¬ π§πππ¦ π ππ§π§ππ₯π¦ This is exactly the kind of distinction that often disappears in supplement marketing. A headline might say: βCreatine builds muscle in older adults.β The actual research is more nuanced. The latest review provides reasonably good evidence for a modest additional strength effect, while the evidence for additional muscle-mass and physical-function benefits is less certain. That's a very different statement. ππ§ ππ’ππ¦π‘'π§ π£π₯π’π©π ππ₯πππ§ππ‘π ππ¦ π‘ππππ¦π¦ππ₯π¬ The study compared different training-plus-supplement strategies. It does not mean every man over 60 needs creatine. And it does not mean men in their 30s, 40s or 50s will experience exactly the same effect. The researchers specifically cautioned that the findings should not automatically be extrapolated to frail, sarcopenic or functionally limited populations. π§ππ ππππππ₯ π£πππ§π¨π₯π The new research fits with a broader evidence base. A 2024 meta-analysis in adults younger than 50 found that creatine combined with resistance training increased lean body mass compared with resistance training alone. A 2025 dose-response meta-analysis covering 61 trials also found increased fat-free mass with creatine supplementation alongside resistance training. So the story isn't that one new paper suddenly proves creatine. It's that another well-designed analysis adds to an already substantial research base. π ππ‘π―π± π§πππππͺππ¬ The latest research supports a modest additional strength benefit from combining creatine with resistance training in older adults. That's meaningful. But it isn't revolutionary. And it doesn't change the fundamentals: Lift. Eat adequately. Recover. Stay consistent. Creatine can be an addition to that foundation. π§ππ ππ’π§π§π’π πππ‘π The most interesting part of the new study isn't that creatine βworks.β We already knew creatine was well studied. The interesting part is how precisely the researchers describe its benefit: small strength improvement, uncertain additional muscle-mass benefit, and insufficient evidence to claim better physical function.
