Plasmalogens and the Aging Brain: Promising Mouse Data, Not a Supplement Recommendation

Could a naturally occurring type of lipid help protect the aging brain? A recent ScienceDaily report highlighted research in which plasmalogens—a group of phospholipids found in cell membranes and abundant in tissues such as the brain—were studied in older mice. The plasmalogens used in the research were derived from edible sea squirts. The results were intriguing. Older mice receiving plasmalogen supplementation performed better on tests of learning and memory, while researchers also observed more synapses and changes associated with improved synaptic plasticity. Brain inflammation was lower in treated animals, and other markers associated with aging appeared to improve. The potential mechanism is particularly interesting. But there is an important distinction between a compelling biological mechanism and a proven human treatment. Much of the evidence highlighted in the ScienceDaily story comes from animal research. That means the findings are useful for generating hypotheses and designing further studies, but they do not establish that buying a plasmalogen supplement will prevent dementia, reverse brain aging, or improve memory in every older adult.
